Resins

The 19 products at a glance

Botanical names are given as they appear on the supplier record or the pack label; the country is the one the supplier states for each product. “Label” marks a pack name that GBIF/WCVP do not confirm for that origin or form.

Plant families

Twelve of the 19 products are resins of trees in the Burseraceae family. The trees belong to the genera Protium (black copal, breu branco), Bursera (white copal, palo santo resin), Dacryodes (both grey copals), Canarium (dammar, elemi), Boswellia (frankincense) and Commiphora (myrrh).

Three products come from conifers: Scots pine and balsam fir, both of the pine family (Pinaceae), and sandarac from Tetraclinis articulata, the arar tree of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Benzoin is the resin of Styrax benzoin (Styracaceae). The camphor is labelled Cinnamomum camphora, a member of the laurel family that WCVP now lists under the accepted name Camphora officinarum. Peppermint, named for the menthol crystals, belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae).

Forms and pack sizes

The pieces differ from one product to the next. The photos show black and white copal as irregular lumps, dammar and elemi as pale yellow pieces, breu branco as grey granules and small lumps, the Ethiopian myrrh as small reddish-brown granules and the frankincense from Sudan as cut fragments. Scots pine rosin comes as glassy golden flakes.

Fourteen products are sold in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg. The exceptions are breu branco (100 g or 1 kg), palo santo resin (25 g or 100 g), and the Indian frankincense, the Kenyan myrrh and the Peruvian grey copal (100 g, 250 g or 1 kg). All pack sizes of one product hold the same resin.

Related categories

The palo santo resin is also listed under Palo Santo, next to sticks and logs of the same tree. Charcoal discs, a metal incense burner and other accessories are in Incense Accessories.

Burning safely

Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Storage

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.

Discreet delivery

Orders are packed on working days and leave in plain outer packaging that does not describe the contents. Once your order has shipped, we email you the tracking link when one is available. Estimated delivery times, right of withdrawal and exceptions: Delivery, tracking and returns.
