Huni Kuin rapé at Mycotrop

The product names in this category spell the word in two ways, Huni Kuin Rapeh and Huni Kuin Rapé, and hapé is a third common spelling. All three refer to a South American snuff of plant material that, according to a 2015 analysis by US CDC researchers, may or may not contain tobacco.

This category groups the blends by the people name in their product name: every product here is called Huni Kuin Rapeh or Huni Kuin Rapé, followed by the name of the blend. Like every item in the shop, they are sold strictly as collectible or souvenir items.

Who the Huni Kuin are

Huni Kuin is the name that the people also known as Kaxinawá use for themselves. According to the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), they speak a language of the Pano family and live on both sides of the border between Brazil and Peru. In Brazil their villages lie in the state of Acre, along rivers such as the Tarauacá, Jordão, Envira and Purus; in Peru, on the Purus and Curanja rivers. This background explains the name only: Mycotrop takes it from the product names and makes no statement about the origin or maker of any blend listed here.

Other peoples and the full range

Blends that carry the name of another people have their own categories, for example Nukini and Yawanawa. The complete range, including tobacco-free blends, tepi, kuripe and ashes, is in the main Rapé category.

Rapé: what is known

Rapé (also spelled hapé or rapeh) is the name for Amazonian snuffs, most often made of finely ground tobacco, usually Nicotiana rustica, mixed with bark ash or other plants. In Portuguese, rapé simply means snuff; the word comes from the French “râpé”, grated. There is no single recipe: the blend changes with the people, the region and the purpose, and tobacco-free rapés also exist.

Among several peoples of Acre, including the Huni Kuin, the Yawanawá and the Noke Koî (Katukina), rapé has a ritual role. It is blown into the nostrils with a tepi, a long pipe handled by another person, or with a kuripe, a V-shaped applicator used on one’s own.

Known compounds	Nicotine, in very variable amounts: 0.6 to 4.8% in the rapés analysed by a US CDC laboratory. Alkaline ashes make the nicotine easier to absorb (Stanfill et al. 2015).
Reported effects	Brief burning in the nose, watering eyes, runny nose; dizziness, nausea and sometimes vomiting, which practitioners call a “purge”. Rapé is not psychedelic.
Traditional use	Shamanic and communal use among the Huni Kuin, Yawanawá and Noke Koî of Acre, often in ceremonies where ayahuasca is also present (ISA; Faria 2016).
State of research	Chemical analyses of commercial products, with no clinical study of rapé itself. Health data come from studies of smokeless tobacco.

Good to know

Rapés with tobacco contain nicotine, which is addictive and speeds up the heart; they are not suitable during pregnancy or for people with heart disease.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies smokeless tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).
Nicotine is toxic to children and pets: keep rapé out of their reach.
Do not share an applicator: traces of blood can remain on the tips.

Storing rapé

Keep rapé in a tightly closed container, dry, away from light and heat: the powder takes up moisture and clumps quickly.
