Smudge Bundles

The range at a glance

Each row uses the common name from the product title. Botanical names come from the supplier records and were checked against GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of Kew, which also give the plant family.

Sage, cedar and grass: what the names mean

Common names in this category do not always follow botany. White sage and blue sage are true sages of the genus Salvia in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Desert sage, by contrast, is Artemisia tridentata from the daisy family, Asteraceae. Incense cedar belongs to the cypress family, Cupressaceae, and the supplier still lists it under the older name Libocedrus decurrens, which WCVP records as a synonym of Calocedrus decurrens. In the same way, the sweetgrass is sold as Hierochloe odorata, a synonym of Anthoxanthum nitens in the grass family, Poaceae.

Native ranges

According to WCVP, incense cedar is native to Oregon, California and north-western Mexico, and yerba santa to California and Oregon. Desert sage grows wild across western North America, from British Columbia and Alberta south to Arizona, New Mexico and north-western Mexico. Blue sage is native to the west-central and southern United States. For the sage, incense cedar and yerba santa bundles and the sweetgrass braid, the supplier gives the United States as the country; the white sage product name also mentions Oregon. The copal rope is made in the Brazilian state of Pará, the mapacho bundle comes from Brazil and both boxes of incense bars from Ecuador.

Sizes and weights

Sizes are those named by the supplier. White sage is offered as a small and a large bundle, incense cedar as a medium and a large bundle, each as a separate product, and the sweetgrass braid in a medium or large size. The desert sage bundle weighs about 40 to 50 g and the yerba santa bundle about 30 g; for the desert sage, the supplier notes that size and weight vary slightly from bundle to bundle. No weight is published for the other products, so none is given here.

Related categories and delivery

Palo santo wood, resin, incense sticks and floral water are gathered in the Palo Santo category, which also lists both boxes of incense bars. An abalone shell, charcoal discs, a metal burner and a feather are in Incense Accessories. We pack orders on business days and ship them in plain outer packaging with no description of what is inside; if tracking is available, you receive the link by email once the parcel has left. Delivery estimates and the withdrawal right are explained on the Delivery, Tracking & Returns page.

Burning safely

Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Storage

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.

Discreet delivery

Orders are packed on working days and leave in plain outer packaging that does not describe the contents. Once your order has shipped, we email you the tracking link when one is available. Estimated delivery times, right of withdrawal and exceptions: Delivery, tracking and returns.
