Mimosa hostilis

Q: Why is the category called Mimosa hostilis and not Mimosa tenuiflora?

Because the bark is traded under that name. In botany, Mimosa tenuiflora is the accepted name and Mimosa hostilis one of its synonyms, so both names point to the same species.

Q: What does jurema preta mean?

It is the Brazilian common name of Mimosa tenuiflora, spelled jurema-preta in the Flora e Funga do Brasil list. "Preta" is Portuguese for black.

Why Mimosa hostilis has several names

The names on this page reflect more than two centuries of botany. Carl Ludwig Willdenow described the plant as Acacia tenuiflora in 1806, and Jean Louis Marie Poiret moved it to the genus Mimosa in 1810 as Mimosa tenuiflora. Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius later published Acacia hostilis (1823) and Acacia jurema (1828) in the account of his journey through Brazil, and George Bentham published Mimosa hostilis in 1875. Because the epithet tenuiflora is the oldest, the GBIF backbone and Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accept Mimosa tenuiflora and list the later names as synonyms.

The trade never followed that change. Bark sellers kept the name Mimosa hostilis, and its English form, Mimosa hostilis root bark, gave rise to the abbreviation MHRB. Brazil adds a common name, jurema-preta, which the Flora e Funga do Brasil list records for the species; in Mexico the tree is called tepescohuite. This category carries the trade name because that is what most visitors type.

50 g or 250 g: choosing a size

The two sizes differ in weight only. Each is a bag of the same cut root bark from Herborist, and the larger bag holds five times as much as the smaller one. The 50 g bag is the way to see the material in a small quantity; the 250 g bag suits a larger collection. Current prices and stock for each size appear on the product page, where you select the size before adding the bag to your cart.

The plant behind the bark

Mimosa tenuiflora belongs to the legume family, Fabaceae. Floras describe a deciduous, thorny shrub or small tree with bipinnate leaves: 4 to 7 pairs of pinnae, each carrying 15 to 30 pairs of narrow leaflets. Its white flowers sit in cylindrical spikes, and the pods split into 4 to 8 segments. The species grows wild from Mexico to the north of South America and eastern Brazil, where the national flora list places it in the Caatinga, the dry scrubland of the north-east. Within that range it is recorded as a source of fuelwood, charcoal and forage, and as a species with potential for revegetation. The product page gives the range country by country and describes the bark itself.
