Damiana, Muira Puama & Clavo Huasca

Damiana, muira puama and clavo huasca at Mycotrop

The three products on this page share a supplier, a pack format and a continent. Herborist packs each of them in a kraft pouch with a printed label that gives the common name, the Latin name and a tag for the plant part. According to the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, all three are native to the Americas, from Texas and Mexico to Brazil. The table below sets them side by side by family, plant part and native range.

Three plants compared

Damiana

Damiana is Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult., published in 1820. WCVP places it in the passionflower family, Passifloraceae, while the GBIF backbone still files it under Turneraceae. The supplier listing gives the leaf as the plant part, and the pouch photo shows small, greyish-green leaf pieces.

Muira puama

Muira puama is Ptychopetalum olacoides Benth., a tree of the family Olacaceae, described by Bentham in 1843. Brazilian flora records list it from rainforest and Amazonian savanna. The Herborist label marks the product as root, and the photo shows light-brown, splinter-like pieces. Common spellings include muirapuama and muira-puama.

Clavo huasca

Clavo huasca is Tynanthus panurensis (Bureau) Sandwith, a liana of the bignonia family, Bignoniaceae. In Colombia it is recorded in the Amazon region at 200 to 320 m. The pack label spells the genus “Tynnanthus”; the accepted spelling is Tynanthus. The product is sold as cut herb, in light-brown, fibrous pieces.

Packaging and delivery

All products are sold strictly as collectible or souvenir items. Dispatch happens on business days only, and the neutral outer parcel does not name the products inside. When the parcel can be tracked, Mycotrop emails you the link after it has gone out. For other dried plants, see Smart Seeds & Herbs or browse the Smartshop; tracking and the 14-day withdrawal right are explained under Delivery, Tracking & Returns.

Frequently asked questions

Where are these plants native?

All three are native to the Americas. WCVP records damiana from Texas and Mexico to Central America, the Caribbean and eastern Brazil, muira puama in the Guianas and northern Brazil, and clavo huasca in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and northern Brazil.

Which part of each plant is in the pouch?

Damiana is sold as cut leaves, muira puama as root and clavo huasca as cut herb, as stated on the Herborist labels and, for damiana, in the supplier listing.

Why does the clavo huasca label read “Tynnanthus”?

The label prints a variant spelling of the genus. The accepted name in WCVP and GBIF is Tynanthus panurensis, and the shop uses that spelling.

Which sizes are available?

Each of the three plants comes in pouches of 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Is a country of origin given?

No. Neither the labels nor the supplier information available to Mycotrop names a country of origin for these products, so this page does not give one.
