Tynanthus panurensis, cut, in a Herborist pouch

This pouch holds cut plant material of Tynanthus panurensis, sold under the name clavo huasca that is printed on the Herborist label. The label gives the plant part simply as [herb]; the product photo shows a loose heap of light-brown, fibrous, shredded pieces. The label spells the genus "Tynnanthus", while the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts the spelling Tynanthus, which this page uses. Mycotrop offers the same material in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg pouches.

The plant: a climber of the bignonia family

Bureau first described the species in 1865, in the journal Adansonia, as Schizopsis panurensis. Sandwith moved it to the genus Tynanthus in the Kew Bulletin, in a volume dated 1953 and published in 1954. Flora e Funga do Brasil, the official checklist of the Brazilian flora, records its life form as a liana, a twining climber rooted in the ground, in rainforest. The Catálogo de Plantas y Líquenes de Colombia also lists it as a climber, found in the Amazon region of Colombia at 200 to 320 m above sea level.

Native range

WCVP, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, records Tynanthus panurensis as native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Brazil. The Herborist label on this pouch names no country, so no origin is given for this product.

Clavo huasca in other formats

The same species is also listed in the shop as whole clavo huasca vine from Peru and as powdered clavohuasca vine from Brazil. This Herborist pouch is the cut option, in three sizes.
