Microdosing with truffles: guidelines and caution

Microdosing means taking a very small amount of a psychedelic, usually 5–10% of a normal dose, without any “trip” effects. With truffles, that comes to about 0.25–1 g of fresh truffles.

People who microdose often report better mood and focus, but placebo-controlled studies find little or no difference. We would rather tell you that plainly.

The most common schedules

Fadiman protocol

One microdose day, two days off, for 4–8 weeks, then a break of 2–4 weeks.

Every other day

A microdose every second day, or on two fixed days a week, always with a day off between doses.

Tolerance breaks

Tolerance builds quickly: the Trimbos Institute advises breaks of a few weeks rather than a higher dose.

What the studies say

In the largest controlled study (Szigeti et al., 2021, 191 participants), people on placebo improved as much as those who microdosed. Dutch trials with truffles (Marschall et al., 2022; Prochazkova et al., 2026) found no clear effect on mood, anxiety or creativity, apart from a slight effect on the originality of ideas. A 2026 review rates the quality of the evidence as low, and the Trimbos Institute believes that much of the perceived effect may be a placebo effect.

Reducing the risks

  • Possible side effects: headache, nausea, heart complaints, anxiety and slower reactions.
  • Start with the smallest amount, on a day without obligations.
  • Never with lithium or an MAOI, nor with alcohol or other drugs; never stop a prescribed treatment in order to microdose.
  • Not advised with bipolar disorder, a risk of psychosis, an anxiety disorder or a cardiovascular problem, nor as self-medication.

Other products in this category

Frequently asked questions

How many truffles make a microdose?

About 0.25–1 g of fresh truffles, or 5–10% of a normal dose. Start with half a portion (a quarter with the Mycotrop variety) and only increase if you feel nothing.

Does microdosing work?

That has not been shown. Placebo-controlled studies find little or no difference, and much of the perceived effect may be a placebo effect.

Which pack should I start with?

Mexicana, the mildest variety (2 out of 5), or Tampanensis or Atlantis (3 out of 5). The Mycotrop pack is strong: split its portions into quarters.

How should I store a pack?

In the fridge at 2–4 °C, in its original packaging. Do not freeze the truffles, and throw away any mouldy portion.
