Traditional use and composition

Sananga is an Amazonian preparation from the roots or bark of Tabernaemontana; the 2023 Brazilian review cited here concerns T. sananho, while the product label names T. undulata. Its use has spread from villages to cities (Robert et al. 2023). Among the Huni Kuin and Yawanawá of the state of Acre it has a ritual and spiritual place, linked to the notion of “panema”, the bad luck that dogs a person.

Other peoples regard the plant as sacred, such as the Aguaruna of Peru and the Awa, Cofán, Secoya, Shuar, Wao or Kichwa of Ecuador. Iboga-type indole alkaloids (coronaridine, voacangine, ibogamine) have been described in the bark of T. sananho. Little research has been published on these species.

Known compoundsIboga-type monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (coronaridine, voacangine, 3-hydroxycoronaridine, heyneanine, ibogamine) in the bark of T. sananho; T. undulata is less documented.
Traditional useRitual place among the Huni Kuin and Yawanawá of Acre; sacred plant for the Aguaruna of Peru and several peoples of Ecuador.
State of researchLittle published. A 2023 Brazilian review calls for further studies. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

Good to know

  • A 2023 Brazilian review notes that one alkaloid of the plant, voacangine, is classed as an irritant (GHS) and calls for safety studies (Robert et al. 2023).

What the photos show

The main photo shows the bottle on its own: a transparent body, an amber-yellow liquid, a black dropper cap and a yellow-green label. It reads the Maya Herbs logo, "Tribal Sananga", the Latin name Tabernaemontana undulata and "5ml". The other two images do not show the contents of the bottle: intertwined light-brown roots and a white five-petalled flower on green foliage.

What the product data states, and what it leaves open

The product data gives the form (liquid), the country (Brazil) and the region (Acre). It does not say which part of the plant the liquid comes from or how it is made, and the label visible in the photo lists no ingredients, so the nature of the liquid is not specified.

A shrub or tree of tropical America

Vahl described Tabernaemontana undulata in 1798 in his Eclogae Americanae. The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Apocynaceae and describes it as a shrub or tree of wet tropical environments. Its native range runs from Costa Rica and Panama through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador and Peru to northern Brazil, and includes Trinidad and Tobago. Sananga is the trade name printed on the label.

Origin and attributions

The product data says the product comes from Indigenous communities in Acre; neither the label nor the data available allows this to be verified or a people to be named. "Tribal" is part of the product name and does not refer to a specific people.

Precautions

Sananga is described as an eye irritant: the product data reports intense burning and tearing, and advises against any use with eye disease, eye injury or recent eye surgery, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is not a medicine, and this page gives no instructions for use.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
