This product is the shredded bark of the fever tree, Vachellia xanthophloea. The supplier lists bark as the plant part, shredded as the form and South Africa as the country. The pouch label uses the name Mukanya Kude, gives the older botanical name Acacia xanthophloea, reads “Cut” and carries a “Made in South Africa” seal. Why two Latin names appear
George Bentham described the species in 1875 as Acacia xanthophloea. The combination Vachellia xanthophloea (Benth.) Banfi & Galasso was published in 2008, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) now lists it as the accepted name. Both names refer to the same tree, so you will find either one on labels and in older references. WCVP lists its native range as Somalia, Kenya, DR Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, KwaZulu-Natal and the northern provinces of South Africa.
What the photos show
The first photo shows the labelled kraft pouch beside a clay bowl of bark; the second shows the bowl on its own. The pieces are irregular, fibrous strips and chips in reddish-brown tones. As this is natural material, piece size and colour vary from pack to pack.
