Ecuadorian chaliponga: whole Diplopterys cabrerana leaves
Chaliponga is the trade name for the leaves of Diplopterys cabrerana. This lot comes from Napo in Ecuador, according to the supplier, and the kraft pouch is labelled "Whole leaves – Napo" with a "Made in Ecuador" badge. In its product data the supplier also names the Quichua people. The leaves are broad, dried and uncut, with their veins still visible. Traditional use and composition
Diplopterys cabrerana, called chaliponga, is a liana of the Malpighiaceae family native to the Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela). Together with Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis, it is one of the most documented yagé (ayahuasca) plants in Colombia, among peoples of the Putumayo, Vaupés and Caquetá such as the Siona, Cofán and Inga (Brache and Diazgranados 2026).
In the Colombian Putumayo and in Ecuador, it is this liana, rather than Psychotria viridis, that is associated with yagé (Brito-da-Costa et al. 2020). This page is documentary: it describes neither preparation nor effects.

Diplopterys cabrerana, a liana of the Malpighiaceae
The species was first published in 1958 as Banisteriopsis cabrerana Cuatrec. and transferred to the genus Diplopterys in 1979; the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the newer name. WCVP lists it as native to Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and the North region of Brazil. Brazilian and Colombian plant lists record it as a liana, a woody climber of rainforest. An Ecuadorian checklist of useful plants notes local names such as challi panka and chakra panka.
Ecuador or Peru
