- Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Diplopterys cabrerana, called chaliponga, is a liana of the Malpighiaceae family native to the Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela). Together with Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis, it is one of the most documented yagé (ayahuasca) plants in Colombia, among peoples of the Putumayo, Vaupés and Caquetá such as the Siona, Cofán and Inga (Brache and Diazgranados 2026).
In the Colombian Putumayo and in Ecuador, it is this liana, rather than Psychotria viridis, that is associated with yagé (Brito-da-Costa et al. 2020). This page is documentary: it describes neither preparation nor effects.
| Known compounds | Tryptamines: mainly DMT (McKenna et al. 1984), with bufotenine as a minor compound (Rodríguez et al. 2022). |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Plant associated with yagé (ayahuasca) among peoples of the north-west Amazon, including the Siona, Cofán and Inga. |
| Where the use comes from | North-west Amazon: Putumayo, Vaupés and Caquetá in Colombia, and Ecuador. |
| State of research | Limited ethnobotanical and chemical documentation, mostly in studies devoted to ayahuasca. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this plant. |
What the photos show
The main photo shows an upright kraft pouch with a green and brown Maya Ethnobotanicals label, reading "Chaliponga", "Diplopterys cabrerana" and "Whole Leaves – Napo" with a "Made in Peru" seal; the "Net Weight" field is blank in the image. In front of it, a woven basket holds dried greyish-green leaves of varying sizes. The second photo shows the basket on its own: dried leaves, some of them brown, with a few thin stems.
A liana of the Malpighiaceae
The species was first published in 1958 as Banisteriopsis cabrerana Cuatrec.; B. Gates moved it to the genus Diplopterys in 1979. GBIF and the WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accept Diplopterys cabrerana and list the older name as a synonym. According to the WCVP, the species is native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and northern Brazil. Chaliponga is a common name; GBIF also records challi panka and chakra panka.
Napo and Made in Peru
The label says Napo without stating whether this is a river, a district or a province; it also carries Made in Peru, which names the country where the product was made. The Chaliponga category groups other lots of the same species, with other stated sources.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
- The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
