Shamanic Snuff

The Shamanic Snuff line at Mycotrop

All 16 blends on this page come from one supplier, whose article numbers RASC01 to RASC16 match the references on the product pages. The product photos show the line name Shamanic Snuff and the blend name on each label; the labels of the tobacco blends also read Native Brazilian Snuff. Shamanic Snuff is the supplier’s name for the range, not a description of how the products are used. Rapeh and hapé are other spellings of rapé. The sixteen blends are offered only as collectibles or souvenirs, in line with the notice at the foot of every page.

Sixteen blends at a glance

For each tobacco blend, the table lists the tobacco, the ash and the further ingredients named on the supplier’s page. For the tobacco-free blends the product photos show the label but no ingredient list, so the table says “not listed”.

Tobaccos, ashes and named plants

Five tobacco blends use tsunu ash, which the supplier says it obtains from the Yawanawa in the Rio Gregório lands of the municipality of Tarauacá. It adds that opinions differ on which tree gives the ash and that some name pau pereira (Platycyamus regnellii, a member of the legume family). Sabiá and Arapiraca are rope tobaccos from the town of Arapiraca in north-eastern Brazil; moi is described as a local mapacho grown by farmers in the upper Juruá region of Acre.

The supplier gives botanical names for four further plants. Clove vine is Tynanthus elegans (Bignoniaceae). Chambá, also called trevo cumaru, is given as Justicia pectoralis, which WCVP now lists as Dianthera pectoralis (Acanthaceae). Bobinsana is Calliandra angustifolia and cumaru is Dipteryx odorata, the tonka bean tree, both in the Fabaceae; the tonka bean tree is native to Venezuela, the Guianas and northern and west-central Brazil.

Tobacco-free blends

Six blends carry Tobacco Free on the label and in the product name: Parica, Aura, Haux Haux, Trevo Cumaru, Mint and Tonka. Four of these share their name with a tobacco blend of the same line, so the product name is the quickest way to tell them apart. The supplier’s page for Trevo Cumaru names trevo cumaru as a component; for the other five, Mycotrop has no ingredient list and states none.

The complete range, with blends named after Indigenous peoples, applicators and ashes, is in the main Rapé category, where every Shamanic Snuff blend is listed as well. Blends sold under the name of the Yawanawa have a separate Yawanawa category.

Frequently asked questions

What does Shamanic Snuff mean in this shop?

It is the line name the supplier prints on the labels of these 16 blends. Mycotrop uses it only as the name of the range.

Which Shamanic Snuff blends contain tobacco?

Ten: Amazon, Golden, Haux Haux, Mint, Parica, Chambá and Bobinsana, Tonka, Tsunu Extra, Tsunu Native and Tsunu Arapiraca. The supplier calls each of them a tobacco product.

How do the three Tsunu blends differ?

Each combines tsunu ash with one tobacco: sabiá for Tsunu Extra, moi from Acre for Tsunu Native and Arapiraca tobacco for Tsunu Arapiraca, which according to the supplier contains a little more ash than Tsunu Extra.

Which pack sizes are available?

All 16 blends are sold in 10 g and 50 g packs. The supplier offers further sizes that Mycotrop does not stock.

Why do the same blends appear under Rapé?

Every product of this line is also filed in the main Rapé category, so both pages show the same items.
