Tsunu Extra: Tsunu ash with Sabiá rope tobacco

Tsunu Extra is a rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) from the Shamanic Snuff range, the supplier's own line of house blends. It follows what the supplier calls the basic Tsunu recipe of the Yawanawa: tobacco and Tsunu ash, with no further ingredients declared. Here the tobacco is Sabiá, a dark rope tobacco from north-eastern Brazil. Mycotrop stocks the blend in 10 g and 50 g tins.

The Sabiá tobacco

According to the supplier, Sabiá is a deep black tobacco sold as corda: a rope wound onto large rolls. It comes from the town of Arapiraca in north-eastern Brazil, where it is grown and fermented. Before packing, the supplier passes its snuffs through a 100-micron sieve, which explains the very fine powder you see in the open tin.

The Tsunu ash

The supplier sources the Tsunu ash from the Yawanawa, who live on the Gregório river lands in the municipality of Tarauacá and burn the ash by hand. Which tree gives the original Tsunu ash is not settled. The supplier notes that some people name pau pereira (Platycyamus regnellii, a species of the legume family), that ashes from the region range from white to greyish red, and that the original ash is cream-coloured.

Three Tsunu blends, three tobaccos

The Shamanic Snuff range has three Tsunu blends that differ mainly in their tobacco: Tsunu Native with moi tobacco from Acre, Tsunu Extra with Sabiá, and a Tsunu blend with Arapiraca tobacco. Rapé sold under the Yawanawa's own name is listed in the Yawanawa category.
