Tsunu Arapiraca is a rapé from the Shamanic Snuff range, made with Tsunu ash from the Yawanawa and tobacco from Arapiraca in north-eastern Brazil. Compared with Tsunu Extra, the supplier uses a little more ash and a little less tobacco. It comes in a labelled 10 g or 50 g metal tin.

Tsunu ash and Arapiraca tobacco in one blend
Tsunu Arapiraca is a rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) from the supplier’s Shamanic Snuff house range. Mycotrop names it after its tobacco; the tin label shows the supplier’s original blend name. Like the other Tsunu blends of the range, it has two declared ingredients, tobacco and Tsunu ash, and differs from them in the tobacco and in the share of ash. You can order it in 10 g or 50 g.

The Arapiraca tobacco
Arapiraca is a town in north-eastern Brazil. The supplier describes it as one of the main growing areas of Nicotiana rustica, a tobacco species of the nightshade family. The tobacco is grown there and delivered in rope form on large rolls, which the supplier then grinds for its blends.
More ash, less tobacco
According to the supplier, this blend holds slightly more Tsunu ash and slightly less tobacco than Tsunu Extra, and its colour is the closest in the range to the rapé the Yawanawa make themselves. The ash comes from the Yawanawa of the Gregório river lands in Tarauacá, who burn it by hand. Rapé sold under the Yawanawa’s own name includes Yawanawa Rapé – Tsunu.
Other Tsunu blends in the range
The third Tsunu blend of the Shamanic Snuff range, Tsunu Native, uses moi, a local tobacco from Acre. All three share the same two-ingredient recipe.
Rapé: what is known
Rapé (also spelled hapé or rapeh) is the name for Amazonian snuffs, most often made of finely ground tobacco, usually Nicotiana rustica, mixed with bark ash or other plants. In Portuguese, rapé simply means snuff; the word comes from the French “râpé”, grated. There is no single recipe: the blend changes with the people, the region and the purpose, and tobacco-free rapés also exist.
Among several peoples of Acre, including the Huni Kuin, the Yawanawá and the Noke Koî (Katukina), rapé has a ritual role. It is blown into the nostrils with a tepi, a long pipe handled by another person, or with a kuripe, a V-shaped applicator used on one’s own.

- Rapés with tobacco contain nicotine, which is addictive and speeds up the heart; they are not suitable during pregnancy or for people with heart disease.
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies smokeless tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).
