This rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) carries the name of the Kuntanawa, an Indigenous people of the Alto Juruá region in Acre, Brazil. Its supplier declares two components: Sabiá tobacco and ash from the burnt roots of Tabernaemontana sananho, the shrub that gives the blend its name. The shrub behind the name
The supplier names the plant as Tabernaemontana sananho and notes that it is popularly called sananga across Brazil. GBIF lists Tabernaemontana sananho Ruiz & Pav. as an accepted species of the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. In this blend the plant is declared in one form only: ash made from its burnt roots.
Sananga and sanango elsewhere in the shop
The same species is sold on its own as Peruvian Uchu Sanango, a shredded wood. The shredded root bark listed as Katukina Sananga is labelled with a different species, Tabernaemontana undulata. These are separate products, and a shared common name says nothing about what a blend contains.
Sabiá tobacco and the Kuntanawa
According to the supplier, Sabiá is a variation of Nicotiana rustica, a tobacco species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), and is found in the form of ropes or thick coils. It is also the tobacco of the Kuntanawa blend Jarina. The Instituto Socioambiental places the Kuntanawa in the Pano language family and estimated them at about 400 people in 2008, living on the upper Tejo river inside the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve. Their other blends are listed under Kuntanawa.
