Canela de Velho: Miconia ash and Sabiá tobacco from Acre
Canela de Velho is a rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) sold under the Huni Kuin name. The supplier states that it is made by Huni Kuin living in the Indigenous Land of Igarapé do Caucho, near the Tarauacá River in Acre, northern Brazil, a community that can only be reached by boat. The plant behind the name
In Portuguese, canela de velho literally means "old man's shin". The supplier explains that the name refers to the gnarled, aged-looking bark of Miconia albicans, which recalls the thin legs of an old man. GBIF lists Miconia albicans as an accepted species of the family Melastomataceae, recorded from Mexico and the Caribbean south to Paraguay, including the Brazilian state of Acre. In this rapé the plant is present only as ash.
Sabiá tobacco and tobacco ropes
The tobacco of this blend is Sabiá, which the supplier describes as a strain of Nicotiana rustica. It is usually prepared as "tobacco ropes": the leaves are harvested, fermented and twisted by hand into thick cords. Sabiá is also the base of the Huni Kuin blend Cacau, made with cacao-tree ash, while Tradition uses a tobacco strain kept by a few Huni Kuin communities. All blends with the people's name are grouped under Huni Kuin.
