Bamboo tubes in a relief resin binding

The Senna is one of the bamboo kuripes that Mycotrop lists in its rapé accessories. Two bamboo tubes form a V. Where they meet, a resin binding encloses them and tapers to a point. In the photos the binding is grey and black, worked in raised, swirling lines, with a cowrie shell set on the front. The bamboo of the tubes is a warm yellow. There is one version, with no size or colour to choose.

Senna, plain or with a figure

If you prefer bamboo without any binding or decoration, the plain bamboo kuripe is the undecorated model. The bamboo kuripe with a modelled snake takes the opposite route, with a coloured snake figure wound around the joint. More models, with birds, crystals or hardwood, are in rapé accessories.

Tepi and kuripe

A tepi is a long pipe: one person blows the rapé into another person’s nostril. A kuripe is a V-shaped applicator: one end goes to the mouth, the other to the nostril, and you blow yourself. Depending on the people, these pipes are made of bamboo, hollow bone or rolled leaves; wood, ceramic and stone are also common today (Faria 2016).

Care

Empty out any remaining powder after each use and let the applicator dry completely before putting it away.

Good to know

  • Keep one applicator per person: studies of shared nasal straws found blood and hepatitis C virus on the tips (Aaron et al. 2008).
