The jarina palm
Jarina is a Brazilian name for an ivory-nut palm of the genus Phytelephas (palm family, Arecaceae), whose hard seeds are known as vegetable ivory or tagua. The supplier gives the species as Phytelephas aequatorialis. In GBIF, however, the Portuguese name jarina is recorded for Phytelephas macrocarpa, which the World Checklist of Vascular Plants lists as native to northern Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Panama, while P. aequatorialis is native to Ecuador. Until the supplier confirms the species, this page names only the genus.
A flower scent in rapé
According to the supplier, jarina flowers are seldom used in rapé, and their scent is used in floral waters and perfumes in the region. Because the fragrance is volatile, its Kuntanawa partners have developed their own methods to collect and keep it. The supplier describes the floral note in the finished blend as subtle rather than dominant.
Sabiá tobacco and Tsunu ash
The supplier identifies Sabiá as a variety of Nicotiana rustica, a tobacco species in the nightshade family (Solanaceae); the same tobacco is declared in Heart of the Boa. Tsunu ash comes from the upper Juruá region. On another product page the same supplier explains that Tsunu names several trees of one genus from the Amazon basin rather than a single species; no botanical name is given.
The Kuntanawa of the upper Juruá
According to the Instituto Socioambiental, the Kuntanawa are a people of the Pano language family who live on the upper Tejo river, inside the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve in the municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo, Acre. The Kuntanawa category also lists Yunu, scented with the leaves of the yunu tree, and Samauma Flower.
