Onça, the jaguar blend of Xiti Nukini

This rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) is named after the Nukini, an Indigenous people of the state of Acre in western Brazil, and after the jaguar, called onça in Portuguese. According to the supplier, it is the signature blend of Xiti Nukini, who leads the Recanto Verde community in the Serra do Divisor National Park. The supplier states that it is a tobacco product but does not disclose the other ingredients. Mycotrop stocks Onça in 10 g and 50 g; both tins hold the same blend.

Why the blend is called Onça

Onça is the Portuguese word for the jaguar; the spotted jaguar is called onça-pintada. The supplier explains that the Nukini are often called the people of the jaguar and that the animal has a central place in their identity. The same blend is also sold under the English name Jaguar.

The maker: Xiti Nukini

The supplier describes Xiti Nukini as a young leader of the Recanto Verde community and as a rapé maker of his people. He is also a musician who performs traditional chants and songs in Portuguese. Like many peoples of Acre, the Nukini almost lost their rapé making during the rubber boom; the supplier credits Xiti with reviving it in recent years.

A recipe that stays with the maker

The exact combination of herbs in Onça is kept by Xiti Nukini, in line with what he was taught, and the supplier does not publish it. For this reason the table lists only tobacco. If you are looking for a Nukini blend with named ingredients, Mulata, made by a member of Xiti's extended family, declares mapacho tobacco, tsunu ash and tansy, and Piri Piri, also made in Recanto Verde, names the herb Justicia pectoralis. Further blends are listed in the Nukini category.
