African dream root is the trade name of Silene capensis, a South African member of the carnation family. Botanical name and native range
The name Silene capensis was published by Otth in de Candolle's Prodromus in 1824. Kew's World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) now lists it as a synonym of Silene undulata subsp. undulata; the species Silene undulata itself was named by Aiton in 1789. WCVP gives the native range as Zimbabwe to South Africa: Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, and the Cape Provinces, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and northern provinces of South Africa. In English the plant is also called wavy catchfly or Cape catchfly.
