- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Psychotria viridis, known as chacruna, is a small shrub of the coffee family native to the Amazon. In the ethnobotanical literature its leaves are associated with ayahuasca, the ritual drink of many peoples of the western Amazon, notably in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Chemical analysis of the leaves identified two indole alkaloids, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and N-methyltryptamine, as well as triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids) and sterols (Soares et al. 2017).
| Known compounds | Indole alkaloids: DMT and N-methyltryptamine. Pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids), sterols, fatty acids and long-chain hydrocarbons. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Leaves associated with ayahuasca in the north-western Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), according to Schultes (1976). |
| State of research | Chemical studies and early laboratory tests on extracts. Human data concern ayahuasca as a whole. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
The plant: a shrub of the coffee family
Psychotria viridis was described by Ruiz and Pavón in Flora Peruviana in 1799. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Rubiaceae, the family that also includes coffee. Several older names are listed as synonyms, among them Palicourea viridis and Psychotria glomerata. Plant checklists from Brazil and Colombia describe it as a shrub, sometimes a small tree. In Brazil it is recorded in gallery forest, floodplain (várzea) forest and rain forest; in Colombia it is recorded between 10 and 1,040 m above sea level.
Native range
The recorded native range runs from south-eastern Mexico through Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, and across Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Brazil. In south-eastern Brazil the species is recorded as introduced. No country of origin is stated for this product.
Other chacruna in the shop
The Chacruna category lists two more products of the same species, both whole leaves with a stated origin: Chacruna from Ucayali, Peru and Shipibo Chacruna from Peru. Both come in the same three pack sizes.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
