White copal (copal blanco) from Mexico
White copal is the trade name of this pale tree-sap resin, which the supplier also calls copal blanco. The listed botanical name is Bursera jorullense, the plant part is tree sap and the country is Mexico; the pouch label reads “White Copal”, “Incense Resin” and “Made in Mexico”. The four photos show irregular lumps in pale, milky yellow: some pieces are clear, others carry a fine dusty coating. Choose 50 g, 250 g or 1 kg. Mycotrop sells it strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Which Bursera is on the label?
The label spelling “jorullense” corresponds to Bursera jorullensis (Kunth) Engl. Both GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) list that name as a synonym of Bursera copallifera (Moc. & Sessé ex DC.) Bullock, an accepted species of the Burseraceae. WCVP records Bursera copallifera as native to central, north-eastern, south-western and Gulf regions of Mexico. The product name keeps the label spelling so that you can match it with the pack.
Three copals, three colours
“Copal” covers resins from several genera of the Burseraceae. Beside this white copal, the range has a black copal from Mexico, labelled Protium paniculatum, and a grey copal from Peru, labelled Dacryoides (Dacryodes) peruviana. Colour helps to recognise them; the label name tells you which tree the resin is attributed to.
Burning safely
Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.
Precautions
- Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
- Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
- Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
- Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.
Storage
Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
