Sandarac is a resin formed from the sap of a single conifer, the arar tree. The supplier gives Tetraclinis articulata as the botanical name, tree sap as the plant part and Morocco as the country, and the pouch label adds “Incense Resin” and “Made in Morocco”. In the photos the resin appears as small, irregular grains in pale straw yellow and amber, mixed with a few darker pieces. It is available in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg. The arar tree
GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accept Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) Mast. as the only species of its genus, in the Cupressaceae, the cypress family. Its English names include arar tree and sandarac tree; an older synonym is Thuja articulata Vahl. WCVP records the species as native to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Spain and Sicily, so the country on the label lies within its natural range.
Sandarac and other conifer resins
Sandarac is easy to confuse with rosin by colour alone. Our Scots pine rosin from Portugal comes from Pinus sylvestris in the pine family and is sold as flat golden flakes. The balsam fir resin, labelled Abies balsamea, is a third conifer resin in the range.
Burning safely
Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
