Black copal, or night copal in the supplier’s product name, is a natural incense resin formed from tree sap. The supplier gives Mexico as the country of origin and Protium paniculatum as the botanical name. The resin is supplied as rough, irregular lumps of different sizes. The name and the colour
“Black” belongs to the trade name and does not describe every piece. In the product photos the lumps are light brown, beige and grey, with a dusty surface and amber patches where they are broken. Natural resin varies between batches, so the pieces in your pack may look slightly different from the pictures.
Copal in our resin range
Copal is a trade name used for resins of several trees, so the botanical name on the label is the clearest way to tell the products apart. GBIF and WCVP accept Protium paniculatum Engl. as a species of the Burseraceae. The range also includes white copal from Mexico, labelled Bursera jorullense, and grey copal from Indonesia, labelled Dacryodes peruviana.
Burning safely
Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

- Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
- Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
- Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
- Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.
Storage
Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
