Dammar, a trade name
Dammar (or damar) is not a species name: the word covers resins from several Asian trees, mainly Dipterocarpaceae (the genera Shorea and Hopea). The resin of some Canarium species, which belong to the Burseraceae, is also called dammar, for example the “black dammar” of South Asia from Canarium strictum. This is why the botanical name on the label is the detail to keep.
Canarium strictum and Indonesia
Canarium strictum is an accepted species of the Burseraceae. According to Plants of the World Online (POWO, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), it is a tree of wet tropical habitats, native from southern India and Sikkim to southern Yunnan and northern Thailand (Assam, the eastern Himalaya, India, Myanmar, Thailand). Indonesia is not part of that range.
The label reads “Made in Indonesia” and the supplier does not say where the resin was harvested: this page gives both statements as they stand, without reconciling them.
Photos and sizes
The photos show the labelled kraft pouch, then translucent, pale yellow pieces of resin of irregular shape in a terracotta dish. The pouch comes in 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg; only the weight changes. The shop’s other resins are grouped in the Resins category.
Burning safely
Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.
Precautions
- Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
- Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
- Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
- Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.
Storage
Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
