- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Psychotria viridis, known as chacruna, is a small shrub of the coffee family native to the Amazon. In the ethnobotanical literature its leaves are associated with ayahuasca, the ritual drink of many peoples of the western Amazon, notably in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Chemical analysis of the leaves identified two indole alkaloids, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and N-methyltryptamine, as well as triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids) and sterols (Soares et al. 2017).
| Known compounds | Indole alkaloids: DMT and N-methyltryptamine. Pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids), sterols, fatty acids and long-chain hydrocarbons. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Leaves associated with ayahuasca in the north-western Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), according to Schultes (1976). |
| State of research | Chemical studies and early laboratory tests on extracts. Human data concern ayahuasca as a whole. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
About Psychotria viridis
The name Psychotria viridis Ruiz & Pav. was published in 1799 in Flora Peruviana, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, still accepts it. It is a member of the Rubiaceae, the family of the coffee plant. WCVP records a native range from Chiapas in Mexico through Central America and the Caribbean to tropical South America, Peru included. Brazilian and Colombian plant lists describe it as a shrub or small tree.
Two chacruna leaf listings from Peru
Both chacruna leaf products from this supplier are whole Psychotria viridis leaves in the same three sizes. They differ only in the stated source: this one names Pucallpa and the Shipibo-Conibo people, while the chacruna leaves from Ucayali name the wider Ucayali region. Dried leaves from Herborist are listed as Chacruna – Psychotria viridis, and the Chacruna category groups all of them.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
