- Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Psychotria viridis, known as chacruna, is a small shrub of the coffee family native to the Amazon. In the ethnobotanical literature its leaves are associated with ayahuasca, the ritual drink of many peoples of the western Amazon, notably in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Chemical analysis of the leaves identified two indole alkaloids, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and N-methyltryptamine, as well as triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids) and sterols (Soares et al. 2017).
| Known compounds | Indole alkaloids: DMT and N-methyltryptamine. Pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids), sterols, fatty acids and long-chain hydrocarbons. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Leaves associated with ayahuasca in the north-western Amazon (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), according to Schultes (1976). |
| State of research | Chemical studies and early laboratory tests on extracts. Human data concern ayahuasca as a whole. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
What the photos show
The main photo shows an upright kraft pouch with a green and brown Maya Ethnobotanicals label, in front of a woven basket heaped with dried dark green leaves. The label reads "Chacruna", "Psychotria viridis" and "Whole – Ucayali" with a "Made in Peru" seal; the "Net Weight" field is blank in the image. The second photo shows the basket of leaves on its own. The third is a photo of a living plant, with glossy green foliage and a cluster of small cream flowers; it is not the product.
A shrub of the coffee family
Ruiz and Pavón published Psychotria viridis in 1799 in the Flora Peruviana. The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Rubiaceae, the coffee family, and describes it as a shrub or tree of wet tropical environments. Several older names are synonyms, among them Palicourea viridis and Psychotria glomerata. The native range runs from south-eastern Mexico and Central America through Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Brazil; the species is listed as introduced in south-eastern Brazil.
Ucayali, a region of Peru
Ucayali is the name of a region of Peru, and also of a river. The label uses it as a statement of provenance ("Whole – Ucayali"), and the Made in Peru seal names the country where the product was made. It names no village, no people and no harvest date. The Chacruna category groups other lots of the same species, with other stated sources.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
