These are the seeds of Peganum harmala, a plant known in English as Syrian rue, African rue or harmal and also recorded under the name esfand. The Herborist label on the pouch gives the common name, the botanical name and the plant part, seeds. Mycotrop sells them in three sizes, 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg. The plant and its seeds
Carl Linnaeus named Peganum harmala in Species Plantarum in 1753. Flora Iberica describes it as a much-branched perennial herb up to 70 cm tall, glaucous green and woody at the base, with flowers 15 to 20 mm across. The fruit is a roughly globose capsule of 8 to 10 mm with three, sometimes four, chambers. It holds numerous seeds of 3 to 4 mm: flattened, roughly triangular in section, with a warty surface and a colour ranging from greyish to black.
Native range
The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, sums up the native range as the Mediterranean to Mongolia and India. Its list runs from Spain, Italy, Greece and North Africa through Türkiye, the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula to Iran, Central Asia, Pakistan, India, Mongolia and northern China. The species has been introduced in several western US states, in the Cape Provinces of South Africa and in parts of Europe, among them France and Hungary.
