The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Apocynaceae, the dogbane family, and lists Tabernanthe bocca Stapf, Tabernanthe mannii Stapf and Tabernanthe pubescens Pichon among its synonyms.
