Palo santo and its botanical name
Palo santo is a vernacular name, while the botanical name identifies the species. GBIF records palo santo, incense tree, incienso and caraño among the common names of Bursera graveolens, which the GBIF backbone and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accept as a species of the Burseraceae. According to WCVP, the species is native from Mexico and Central America to Peru.
Size of the pieces
The sticks are short, split pieces of pale wood with darker streaks. Because they are cut from natural wood, their length and thickness vary, as the two photos show: first beside the labelled pouch, then on their own in a woven basket. If you prefer longer pieces, the large palo santo sticks are the same species in a bigger cut, and the finely cut palo santo wood is the loose, small-particle form.
