Peruvian palo santo wood, finely cut and sifted
This palo santo is wood of Bursera graveolens reduced to small fragments. The pouch label reads “Palo Santo”, Bursera graveolens, “Fine cut & sifted wood” and “Made in Peru”, under the Maya Incense brand. The plant named on the label
Bursera graveolens is an accepted species of the Burseraceae, the family of Boswellia (frankincense) and Commiphora (myrrh). According to Plants of the World Online (POWO, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), it is a shrub or tree of seasonally dry tropical habitats, native from Mexico to north-western Venezuela and Peru.
“Palo santo” is also a common name for other trees, for example Bulnesia sarmientoi in the Gran Chaco, a species from a different family. The label on this pouch specifies Bursera graveolens.
Fragments rather than sticks
The supplier and the label describe a “fine cut & sifted” wood: cut into small pieces, then sieved. No fragment size is given in figures.
