Banisteriopsis muricata and Banisteriopsis caapi
Both species belong to the genus Banisteriopsis in the Malpighiaceae, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts both. They are not the same plant. B. muricata was first described by Cavanilles as Banisteria muricata and moved to Banisteriopsis by Cuatrecasas in 1958. POWO describes it as a climbing shrub of the seasonally dry tropics, whereas B. caapi is a climber of the wet tropics. Their ranges differ as well: B. muricata reaches from Mexico through Central America to Paraguay and northern Argentina, while B. caapi is recorded only in South America.
Native range and other names
WCVP records Banisteriopsis muricata as native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, and to Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. An Ecuadorian list of useful plants, cited by GBIF, gives it the vernacular names sacha ayawaska, mii and tomo.
