A separate species of Banisteriopsis

Cavanilles described the plant in 1790 as Banisteria muricata, and Cuatrecasas published the combination in Banisteriopsis in 1958. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts it as a species of the Malpighiaceae and lists some forty synonyms for it, among them Banisteriopsis argentea and B. metallicolor. Plants of the World Online describes it as a climbing shrub of the seasonally dry tropics. Its recorded native range is much wider than that of caapi: from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and French Guiana, and south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Ecuador, the country printed on the pouch, lies within it. A GBIF dataset of useful plants in Ecuador records the local names sacha ayawaska, mii, miiyabo and tomo for the species.

The pouch, the cut and a related product

The cover photo shows the labelled pouch beside a clay bowl of the vine, and the second photo shows the bowl alone. The shreds are straw-coloured to light-brown woody slivers with a few darker pieces of bark. The third photo is a general forest picture of a twisted woody vine and does not show the contents of the pouch. The label gives no explanation of the word Red, and this page adds none. The same species is also sold as Red Ayahuasca Vine from Napo, Peru, in 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg. For shredded Banisteriopsis caapi itself, see for example Yellow Ayahuasca.
