Important: a plant that contains MAOIs

Dangerous interactions

This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

  • Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
  • Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
  • Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • We do not give any preparation method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Banisteriopsis caapi is a vine of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Amazon basin. It is best known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a drink that Indigenous peoples and local communities in Amazonia have long used in ritual and traditional settings.

In Brazil, this use has spread to religious organisations such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. A 2026 review lists 119 ethnotaxa of B. caapi, that is, 119 folk names for types of the vine.

Known compoundsβ-carboline alkaloids: harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, which inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAOIs). Their levels vary widely from one sample to another (Santos et al. 2020).
Traditional useAn ingredient of ayahuasca in Amazonia, notably among the Shuar of Ecuador; the Siona distinguish at least 18 types of the vine (Santos et al. 2020). Taken up by Brazilian religions such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime.
State of researchResearch is mostly chemical: the wide variability in levels makes the material hard to standardise (Santos et al. 2020). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

The plant: a climber of the Malpighiaceae

Grisebach published the species in Flora Brasiliensis in 1858 as Banisteria caapi, using a name coined by the botanist Richard Spruce; C.V. Morton moved it to the genus Banisteriopsis in 1931. Kew’s Plants of the World Online describes it as a climber of the wet tropical biome. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants records it as native to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil and north-western Argentina. The checklist lists no subspecies or varieties, so “Yellow” is a trade name used by sellers, not a botanical rank.

The pouch and the cut

The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with the green and brown Maya Ethnobotanicals label beside a clay bowl of the vine; the second photo shows the bowl on its own. The shreds are thin, fibrous strips in olive and pale straw tones. If you prefer uncut pieces, Mycotrop also lists Yellow Ayahuasca as whole vine. A finer cut of another selection is sold as Napo Cielo.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi?

It is an Amazonian vine of the Malpighiaceae family, known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a ritual drink of peoples of Amazonia. It contains β-carboline alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine).

Why is caapi flagged as containing MAOIs?

Because its β-carbolines inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase, as the pharmacological literature describes. This property explains possible interactions with many medicines, hence the warning shown on the page.

Is Yellow Ayahuasca a separate species?

No. The label names Banisteriopsis caapi. Yellow Ayahuasca, or Yellow Caapi on the pouch, is a trade name; the World Checklist of Vascular Plants recognises no varieties of this species.

Which pack sizes can you order?

100 g, 250 g and 1 kg. Every size contains the same shredded vine.

Where does the vine come from?

The label states Made in Peru and names Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem, the Netherlands, as the trader. No region within Peru is given.

How does it differ from the whole vine?

This product is cut into short shreds. The whole-vine version of Yellow Ayahuasca keeps the stems in longer pieces and is listed as a separate product.
