The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled at Kew and published through POWO, lists no subspecies or varieties under Banisteriopsis caapi, so these names say nothing botanical about the plant. Here the name identifies the lot. The same name is used for a cut version, Yellow Ayahuasca shredded vine, which comes in 100 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Banisteriopsis caapi is a climber of the Malpighiaceae that POWO places mainly in the wet tropical biome. WCVP records it as native to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil and north-western Argentina, so Peru lies within its natural range.
