Important: a plant that contains MAOIs

Dangerous interactions

This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

  • Never with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, other MAOIs), lithium, tramadol or stimulants: risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
  • Never with other psychoactive substances (MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, other psychedelics): the effects can become unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.
  • Not suitable for people with heart disease or high blood pressure, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • We do not give any preparation method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Banisteriopsis caapi is a vine of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Amazon basin. It is best known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a drink that Indigenous peoples and local communities in Amazonia have long used in ritual and traditional settings.

In Brazil, this use has spread to religious organisations such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. A 2026 review lists 119 ethnotaxa of B. caapi, that is, 119 folk names for types of the vine.

Known compoundsβ-carboline alkaloids: harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, which inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAOIs). Their levels vary widely from one sample to another (Santos et al. 2020).
Traditional useAn ingredient of ayahuasca in Amazonia, notably among the Shuar of Ecuador; the Siona distinguish at least 18 types of the vine (Santos et al. 2020). Taken up by Brazilian religions such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime.
State of researchResearch is mostly chemical: the wide variability in levels makes the material hard to standardise (Santos et al. 2020). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

About Banisteriopsis caapi

Banisteriopsis caapi is an accepted species of the Malpighiaceae family. It was first described as Banisteria caapi and placed in the genus Banisteriopsis by C.V. Morton in 1931. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants gives its native range as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil and north-western Argentina. Vernacular names recorded in GBIF include caapi, ayahuasca, yagé and mariri.

The bottle and its label

The product photo shows a dark glass bottle with a black dropper cap and a purple label. The label reads Maya, Caapi and Extract 5:1, lists the ingredients and states the volume, 10 ml. If you are comparing caapi extracts, the Peruvian Red Caapi 12:1 liquid extract has a different ratio and comes in 50, 100 or 500 ml. All extracts in the shop are listed under Extracts, and every form of the plant under Banisteriopsis caapi.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the vine Banisteriopsis caapi?

It is an Amazonian vine of the Malpighiaceae family, known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a ritual drink of peoples of Amazonia. It contains β-carboline alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine).

Why is caapi flagged as containing MAOIs?

Because its β-carbolines inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase, as the pharmacological literature describes. This property explains possible interactions with many medicines, hence the warning shown on the page.

What does the label declare?

Two ingredients, Banisteriopsis caapi and alcohol 20%, the extract ratio 5:1 and the volume, 10 ml.

Which part of the plant is used, and where does it come from?

The supplier lists the vine as the plant part and Ecuador as the origin.

How does it differ from the 12:1 caapi extract?

The 12:1 extract has a different ratio, is sold as Peruvian Red Caapi and comes in 50, 100 or 500 ml. This 5:1 extract comes in one size, 10 ml.

Is the caapi vine the same plant as the ayahuasca vine?

Yes. Caapi, ayahuasca, yagé and mariri are vernacular names recorded for one species, Banisteriopsis caapi.
