Peganum harmala in brief
Linnaeus named the species in Species Plantarum in 1753, and it is the type species of the genus Peganum. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, places it in the Nitrariaceae, while the GBIF backbone uses Tetradiclidaceae. WCVP describes the native range as the Mediterranean to Mongolia and India, with Pakistan, Iran and the Central Asian republics included. Flora Iberica describes a much-branched perennial herb up to 70 cm tall, whose capsules hold numerous small seeds, 3 to 4 mm long and greyish to black.
Not a true rue
Despite the English name, Peganum harmala is not related to common rue, Ruta graveolens, which belongs to the citrus family, Rutaceae.
