Botanical identity and native range
Linnaeus described the species as Mimosa peregrina, and it is also found under the synonym Piptadenia peregrina. The name in use today, Anadenanthera peregrina, was published by Spegazzini in 1923. It is the accepted name in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and in the GBIF backbone. The native range covers the Caribbean islands (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago), Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Bolivia and northern, north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil. Botanical references record the common names yopo, cohoba and, in Portuguese, paricá.
Yopo and cebil
Cebil is a different species of the same genus. The cebil products in our range come from Peru and are labelled Anadenanthera colubrina: whole cebil seeds and powdered cebil seeds. When you compare them, go by the botanical name: A. peregrina for yopo, A. colubrina for cebil. The Yopo and cebil category lists the cebil products side by side.
