Whole cebil seeds from Peru
Cebil is the name under which these seeds are traded. The supplier, and the label on its pouch, give the species as Anadenanthera colubrina and the origin as Peru. Traditional use and composition
Cebil, also called vilca, refers to the seeds of Anadenanthera colubrina, a legume tree of the southern Andes and the Gran Chaco. According to a 2024 review, Wichí and ’Weenhayek shamans of the Gran Chaco, Aymara ritual specialists in Bolivia and groups in Peru and north-west Argentina still use it in ritual and protective contexts.
The tradition is very old. Seeds were found with objects linked to their use in north-west Argentina, dating to about 4,000 years ago, and a 2025 study detected traces of vilca in bone tubes from Chavín de Huántar (Peru, about 1200–400 BCE), recovered from a sealed gallery: according to the authors, access to this use was probably restricted.

The species and its names
Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan is an accepted species of the legume family, Fabaceae, in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which gives its native range as Bolivia and Brazil. GBIF records cebil, vilca and huilco among its common names. Checklists differ on the cebil variety: the GBIF backbone accepts Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, whereas WCVP files it under Anadenanthera macrocarpa, a species whose recorded range includes Peru. The pouch label, like our product name, keeps the name Anadenanthera colubrina.
Whole seeds or powder
The cebil range has two forms of the same species from Peru. This listing holds the intact seeds; the powdered cebil seeds are the ground version, listed separately. Both sit in the Yopo category, next to shredded Virola bark. Despite the category name, cebil is not yopo: yopo is the common name of the related species Anadenanthera peregrina.
