Important: a plant that contains DMT

Good to know

This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.

  • Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
  • We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Cebil, also called vilca, refers to the seeds of Anadenanthera colubrina, a legume tree of the southern Andes and the Gran Chaco. According to a 2024 review, Wichí and ’Weenhayek shamans of the Gran Chaco, Aymara ritual specialists in Bolivia and groups in Peru and north-west Argentina still use it in ritual and protective contexts.

The tradition is very old. Seeds were found with objects linked to their use in north-west Argentina, dating to about 4,000 years ago, and a 2025 study detected traces of vilca in bone tubes from Chavín de Huántar (Peru, about 1200–400 BCE), recovered from a sealed gallery: according to the authors, access to this use was probably restricted.

Known compoundsTryptamine alkaloids: bufotenine (5-hydroxy-DMT), DMT and 5-MeO-DMT (Lema 2024).
Traditional useRitual and protective role among peoples of the southern Andes and the Gran Chaco; seeds are sold in markets in Peru, Bolivia and north-west Argentina as protective objects.
Where the use comes fromOldest trace: seeds from north-west Argentina about 4,000 years old; bone tubes from Chavín de Huántar, Peru (about 1200–400 BCE).
State of researchThe work consulted is mostly archaeological and ethnographic. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

Botanical background

The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the GBIF backbone both accept Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan as a species of the Fabaceae, the legume family; WCVP records it as native to Bolivia and Brazil. Common names listed by GBIF include cebil, vilca and huilco. The plant sold as cebil is classified differently depending on the checklist: GBIF keeps it as Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil, while WCVP places it in Anadenanthera macrocarpa, whose range includes Peru. Our product name follows the supplier and its label.

Powder or whole seeds

If you would rather see the seeds themselves, the whole cebil seeds of the same species and country are listed separately. The powder shows only colour and texture. Both are in the Yopo category, although the name yopo itself belongs to a different species, Anadenanthera peregrina.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
