Traditional use and composition
Virola peruviana is a tree of the nutmeg family (Myristicaceae), found mainly in the Peruvian Amazon. In the ethnobotanical literature, Virola trees are known for ritual preparations made from the bark, used in shamanic rites of the north-western Amazon and the upper Orinoco (Schultes 1976; de Smet 1985).
A phytochemical study of this species was published in 1973. It contains tryptamines, including 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine, DMT and 5-methoxytryptamine (González-Rodríguez et al. 2021). Profiles vary widely from sample to sample within the genus (McKenna et al. 1984).

Both the GBIF backbone and the Kew-compiled World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) list Virola peruviana (A.DC.) Warb. as an accepted name in the Myristicaceae, the nutmeg family. Its WCVP distribution covers Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia, plus the North region of Brazil. The Brazilian and Colombian national plant lists describe it as a tree, and Flora e Funga do Brasil records it in terra firme and várzea forest, the latter being seasonally flooded. The genus Virola has more than seventy accepted species, so the full species name is what identifies this bark.
