Important: seeds that contain LSA
Good to know
These seeds contain ergot alkaloids, including ergine (LSA). Nausea and vomiting are common, and these alkaloids constrict the blood vessels.
- Never during pregnancy: ergot alkaloids can cause contractions of the uterus.
- Not suitable for people with cardiovascular disease, circulation problems or liver problems, and never with MAOIs or migraine medicines (triptans, ergot derivatives).
- We do not give any preparation method or dosage for these seeds.
Traditional use and composition
Argyreia nervosa is a climbing vine of the morning glory family (Convolvulaceae), native to the Indian subcontinent and known as Hawaiian baby woodrose. Ayurvedic medicine and the traditional medicine of tribal groups in Assam and other parts of India, such as the Santal and the Lodha, mention it (Paulke et al. 2013).
Its seeds contain ergot alkaloids: mainly ergine (lysergic acid amide, LSA), with isoergine and ergometrine. In the Western world the literature presents them as a “legal high”. According to Paulke et al. (2014), no earlier study had examined commercial seeds and products.
| Known compounds | Ergot alkaloids of the lysergamide family: ergine (LSA), isoergine, ergometrine. Contents of commercial seeds and products are poorly documented. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Plant mentioned in Ayurvedic medicine and in the tribal medicine of Assam and other parts of India (Santal, Lodha). The sources consulted describe no traditional ritual use of the seeds. |
| State of research | Laboratory studies on how LSA binds to receptors; few human data (17 original studies included in a 2025 systematic review). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
Name and classification
In the GBIF taxonomic backbone, Argyreia nervosa (Burm.fil.) Bojer is the accepted name. The species was first published by Burman fil. as Convolvulus nervosus, the basionym of the current name, and later placed in the genus Argyreia. Older catalogues and labels may still use the synonyms Argyreia speciosa or Lettsomia nervosa; they refer to the same species.
Native range and the name "Hawaiian"
Despite its trade name, the plant is not native to Hawaii. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) gives its native range as India, Assam, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. Hawaii is one of many places where the checklist records it as introduced, together with Florida, Queensland, Madagascar, Mauritius and Caribbean islands such as Cuba and Jamaica. The label shown in the product photo does not name a country of origin.
Related whole seeds
The Smart Seeds & Herbs category lists other whole seeds, including Romanian Morning Glory whole seeds (Ipomoea tricolor), a species of the same family, Convolvulaceae, and Mexican Ololiuqui whole seeds.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
