Reported effects and traditional use
Paullinia cupana, guaraná, is a liana of the Sapindaceae family, domesticated in the Brazilian Amazon for its caffeine-rich seeds. It is unclear which people domesticated it, but the Sateré-Mawé, along the Maués River, cultivate it extensively and have built it into their mythology: one of their myths tells how guaraná sprang from the eye of a murdered boy. In the late seventeenth century, the Jesuit João Felipe Betendorf noted that the Sateré-Mawé valued guaraná as highly as Europeans valued gold (Smith and Atroch 2010).
The seeds contain up to about 6% caffeine (Schimpl et al. 2013), about four times as much as coffee according to a 2010 review. The effects reported for guaraná are those of this caffeine.
| Known compounds | Caffeine (up to about 6% of the seeds), traces of theobromine and theophylline, tannins. |
|---|---|
| Reported effects | Attributed to caffeine: a stimulant effect described in the literature, with nervousness and palpitations possible in sensitive people. |
| Traditional use | Sateré-Mawé (Brazilian Amazon): guaraná drink shared daily and on formal occasions; a plant of their mythology. It later became a national drink in Brazil and an ingredient of commercial drinks. |
| State of research | Mostly chemistry and laboratory studies; the effects studied are largely explained by caffeine. No health claim is authorised in the EU for guaraná itself. |
Good to know
- Guaraná is a source of caffeine, richer in caffeine than coffee; nervousness and palpitations are possible in sensitive people.
The plant: a climber of the soapberry family
Paullinia cupana was described by Kunth in Nova Genera et Species Plantarum, the work he published with Humboldt and Bonpland, in 1821. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Sapindaceae, the soapberry family. Older names such as Paullinia sorbilis are listed there as synonyms. The official plant list of Brazil records guarana as a shrub or woody climber (liana) of terra firme forest and gallery forest, and the Colombian plant catalogue lists it as a climber.
Native range
The recorded native range covers northern Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Venezuela. The Brazilian origin of this product comes from the supplier listing; the pouch itself names no country.
Guarana in another format
Besides this ground seed powder, the shop lists guaraná from Brazil as a 20 % dry seed extract of the same species.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
