This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

Traditional use and composition
Peganum harmala, known as Syrian rue or harmal, is a plant of arid regions that extends from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. A 2021 review lists folk uses in several regions: in Iran, Turkey, China and Arab countries the plant is used as protection against the “evil eye”; in Morocco it is burned for protection against spirits, and in India at wedding ceremonies; a Zoroastrian rite also links its burning to a prayer.
Its seeds contain mainly β-carbolines (harmine, harmaline, harmol, harmalol) and quinazoline alkaloids (vasicine, vasicinone).

About Peganum harmala
Peganum harmala is the type species of the genus Peganum, named by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, places it in the Nitrariaceae, while the GBIF backbone uses the family Tetradiclidaceae. Linnaeus recorded it from sandy ground at Madrid and Alexandria and from Cappadocia and Galatia, in present-day Spain, Egypt and Türkiye. Today the WCVP gives its native range as the Mediterranean to Mongolia and India, with introduced populations in the western United States and South Africa.
