The tree and its range
The tree was first named Coumarouna odorata by Aublet; today GBIF and the Kew checklist (WCVP) accept the name Dipteryx odorata (Aubl.) Forsyth f. The Kew checklist records the species as native to northern and west-central Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela. Its Portuguese names include cumaru and cumbaru; English speakers know the seeds as tonka beans, French speakers as fève tonka.
How the seeds look
The photos show a clay bowl heaped with elongated, wrinkled seeds, dark brown to black. The supplier describes tonka beans as oval-shaped, dark brown and wrinkled. The same species also gives the Brazilian cumaru bark ash in the shop, made from the bark rather than the seed.
