Panax ginseng, Korean or Asian ginseng, is a plant of the ivy family (Araliaceae) native to the Far East: Korea, north-eastern China and the Russian Far East, according to the NCCIH. Its root has been used for thousands of years in East Asia, according to the EMA assessment report.
Ginsenosides, triterpene saponins, are its most characteristic compounds. The EMA counts about fifty in the root, making up roughly 2 to 3% of its mass.

Panax ginseng in botany
Panax ginseng C.A.Mey. is an accepted species of the Araliaceae, the ivy family; the name was published in 1842. On the label, the author of the name is written as Meyer. The Kew checklist (WCVP) records the species as native to Korea, Manchuria, Primorye and Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East, and as introduced in north-central China. English common names in GBIF include Korean ginseng and Asian ginseng; German sources list koreanischer Ginseng.
Bottle and label
