Cumaru bark ash, Dipteryx odorata

Cumaru is a Brazilian common name of Dipteryx odorata, a tree also known as tonka bean. This product is its bark, burned and reduced to a pale grey powder. The supplier lists cumaru as the common name, bark as the plant part and Brazil as the country of origin; the label adds the net weight of 50 g. Mycotrop lists the jar with the other single ashes. Like everything in the shop, it is sold strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

The cumaru tree

Dipteryx odorata (Aubl.) Forsyth f. is accepted in the legume family, Fabaceae, by the GBIF backbone and by WCVP, the World Checklist of Vascular Plants; Coumarouna odorata Aubl. is one of its synonyms. GBIF lists cumaru, cumaru-verdadeiro and cumbaru as Portuguese names and tonka bean as an English one. WCVP limits its native range to northern South America: northern and west-central Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela.

Bark ash, not beans

Because of the tonka name, the product is easy to confuse with the beans of the same tree. This jar contains bark ash only, and the supplier declares no other ingredient. The rapé blend Huni Kuin Cumaru is a separate product; its name alone does not tell you what it contains. More single-plant ashes are in the Ashes category.
