The plant: a member of the buckthorn family

Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck first described this species in 1789 as Gouania integrifolia. Otto Kuntze moved it to the genus Helinus in 1891. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Helinus integrifolius as a species of the Rhamnaceae, the buckthorn family, and lists Helinus ovatus and Helinus scandens among its synonyms. Recorded common names include ubhubhubhu in Zulu, soap creeper and soap bush in English, and seepklimop in Afrikaans.

Native range

The recorded native range is wide. It covers South Africa (the Cape provinces, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the northern provinces), Eswatini, Botswana and Namibia, then runs north through Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, the DR Congo, Tanzania and Kenya to Ethiopia and Somalia, with outliers on Socotra and in Yemen. For this product, the pouch and the supplier listing both name South Africa.

Another South African botanical

The shop also lists whole roots of Silene capensis from South Africa, a species of the carnation family that is unrelated to Helinus.
