Heart of the Boa: a Kuntanawa rapé with Sabiá tobacco and a forest vine

This rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) is sold under the name of the Kuntanawa, an Indigenous people of the far west of Acre, Brazil. Its supplier lists Sabiá tobacco, ash of the Sapota tree and a vine called heart of the boa, which gives the blend its name. Mycotrop carries it in two sizes, 10 g and 50 g, with the same blend in each tin.

The vine behind the name

The supplier describes heart of the boa as a vine and links the name to the heart shape of its leaves. In Portuguese the same vine goes by veia de pajé. No botanical name is given, so this page does not suggest one.

Sabiá tobacco and Sapota ash

Sabiá is the tobacco the supplier names for this blend. On its page for the Kuntanawa blend Jarina, which uses the same tobacco, it describes Sabiá as a variety of Nicotiana rustica, a tobacco species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The ash comes from a tree the supplier calls Sapota; it is also declared in Yunu, where the supplier specifies wood and bark as the source.

Who the Kuntanawa are

The Instituto Socioambiental places the Kuntanawa in the Pano language family and estimated them at about 400 people in 2008. They live along the upper Tejo river within the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve, municipality of Marechal Thaumaturgo. ISA also notes that from the late 1980s the family at the centre of the group rejected the label caboclo and affirmed its Indigenous identity.

Other blends sold under the Kuntanawa name, including Força, Nixpu and Samauma, are listed in the Kuntanawa category.
