Nixpu: a Kuntanawa rapé with Brazilian long pepper
This rapé (also written rapeh or hapé) carries the name of the Kuntanawa, an Indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon. Its supplier declares three components: Nicotiana rustica tobacco, sold as mapacho and sourced from north-eastern Brazil; Tsunu ash; and nixpu, a long pepper that grows in Acre. Mycotrop lists it in 10 g and 50 g; the size selector shows which one can be ordered. Like everything in the shop, it is sold strictly as a collectible or souvenir item. Do not consume.

Nixpu or pimenta-longa
The supplier explains that nixpu is the local Indigenous name for pimenta-longa, or long pepper, and identifies the plant as Piper hispidinervum. GBIF lists Piper hispidinervum C.DC. as an accepted species of the pepper family, Piperaceae, with the Portuguese name pimenta-longa. Flora e Funga do Brasil records it as native to Brazil, and Catalogue of Life gives Acre, Amazonas and Roraima in the north as well as Goiás and Minas Gerais. The supplier stresses that it is related to the Asian long pepper but is a different plant, and describes its leaves as aromatic.
Mapacho tobacco and Tsunu ash
The tobacco is Nicotiana rustica, a species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) that is sold in Brazil as mapacho; the supplier sources it from the north-east of the country. The ash is Tsunu. On another product page the same supplier explains that Tsunu names several trees of one genus from the Amazon basin rather than a single species. It describes the finished powder of its Kuntanawa blends as light brown to beige. Tsunu ash is also declared in Força, which pairs it with the herb apuxuri instead of long pepper.
Who the Kuntanawa are
The Instituto Socioambiental places the Kuntanawa in the Pano language family and estimated them at about 400 people in 2008, living on the upper Tejo river inside the Alto Juruá Extractive Reserve in Acre, the same Brazilian state where the supplier says nixpu grows wild. Their other blends are listed under Kuntanawa.
